Update on the Carmel Concert Hall Construction

By Tom Britt Print Preview

The momentum of the Concert Hall construction has continued to evolve at a very quick pace. Currently, there are about 250 workers on site daily constructing the Concert Hall. This includes a second shift of stone masons installing the exterior limestone.

One of the most significant changes to the exterior of the building is the installation of the six limestone pillars on the south side of the structure. The concrete block work on the exterior of the building is substantially complete. The fabrication of the limestone pieces is almost complete. Granite is also being used on the exterior of the building. Over 50 percent of the limestone and granite pieces have been installed on the exterior of the building. The Portico roof is complete. Installation of the copper flashing, which serves as prep work for the clay tile, is ongoing as weather permits. The clay tile is on site and will be installed once the weather improves.

Inside the concert hall, the masonry work is 98 percent complete and mechanical, plumbing and electrical work continues. The temporary HVAC system is being used to control building temperature, which is necessary to accommodate the plaster work. The interior of the building is taking shape and the true beauty of the details are being revealed as the framing and plaster work continues forming the dome and seating areas. The plaster contractor is also working on plaster moldings, trim and columns. Much of this is being made in a nearby project warehouse before being installed in the Concert Hall.

Other interior work is underway. The installation of the oculus skylight in the top of the performance space is complete and the installation of the acoustic curtain track has started. Painting has started in the center dome of the Hall. The oculus black out screen should be installed in the next 30 days. The freight elevator is in operation and the installation of the passenger elevators is in progress.
