Top Ten Movies of 2009

Over the past few months I have been watching more movies than any human being ever should.

I’m a movie critic so it comes with the job; however, I’m also a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. I feel a responsibility to screen as many of the “For Your Consideration” films that are sent to me. After watching hundreds of movies throughout the year, it’s nice to look back at the ones that stood out from the rest.

Whether it’s a box office smash or a small independent film, my criteria remains the same. My favorites are always movies that were enjoyable to watch but also unique and interesting.

Here are my Top Ten Movies of 2009:

10. Everybody’s Fine-Robert De Niro stars in a moving drama about forgiveness and family.

9. The Messenger-Woody Harrelson reminds us what a great actor he is in this military drama.

8. The Proposal-Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have great chemistry and deliver on the laughs.

7. State of Play-Exciting and well-done political thriller with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck.

6. Star Trek-An updated version of the classic series breathes new life into the characters and franchise. It was simply fun to watch.

5. Taken-A kidnapping story with some of the most memorable scenes of the year. Liam Neeson is awesome in this film.

4. District 9-Delivers a completely different version of the alien theme. This is an excellent film that’s full of action, surprises, and excitement.

3. (500) Days of Summer-A beautiful new take on the romantic comedy genre. Original and engaging.

2. The Hangover-One of the best times I ever had at the movies. Loaded with funny characters and LOL moments.

1. Up in the Air-George Clooney and Anna Kendrick star in a movie about travel, communication, love, and work.

This is my number one pick because it’s so well rounded. There is humor, sadness, romance, drama and it also manages to deliver a message about our world at this point in time.

Thanks for reading and best to you in 2010.

*As of this writing I have not screened the highly anticipated James Cameron film Avatar.
