Getting Into the Running Spirit
I don’t always have a plan. Even as I type this, there probably should be an outline, or some notes next to me. There SHOULD be. I have discovered some of the fun of life is not knowing what’s next. Believe me, a couple of weeks in the weather forecasting business will remind you that [...]
Group Helping Make Carmel Greener, One Teen at a Time
So often, big ideas are born from small places, and sometimes a fresh set of minds can create new ideas to old dilemmas. Such is the case of Carmel Green Teen, an organization dedicated to “Making Carmel greener, one youth project at a time.”
When Lauren Gibson was in the fifth grade, she wrote a report [...]
Surgery Surprises
I have always been pretty healthy, and my hospital experience has been limited to the labor and delivery of my three kids. I’ve never even had a cavity, let alone major surgery, so when I entered the hospital early on the morning of December 7 to undergo bilateral mastectomies, there were some surprises. My six-hour [...]
Valentine’s Day: Love It or Leave It?
Whenever Valentine’s Day rolls around, I can’t help but have a moment of silence for all of the Charlie Brown’s in the world. You know … unrequited love and all that. The Little Red Hair Girl was oblivious to poor Charlie’s desires. And oh, the pain and heart ache.
Indeed, Valentine’s Day is a tricky little [...]

My Life Saving
Would you like to save $14,450? You can, claims the Entertainment book, chock-full of good deals, brimming with coupons, awash in discounts. For a cheap person like me, it’s my savior.
My wife advised me not to pay $25.00 for the annual publication. She claimed we’d never use the coupons—and if we did, we’d either [...]
Top Ten Movies of 2009
Over the past few months I have been watching more movies than any human being ever should.
I’m a movie critic so it comes with the job; however, I’m also a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. I feel a responsibility to screen as many of the “For Your Consideration” films that are sent [...]
Happy New Year! Bah Humbug!
Okay, so it’s a new year, and a new decade, all in one shot. Are you excited? Are you filled with hope and renewal? Personally, I can’t stand it. While I love New Year’s Eve in theory, and I’m certainly appreciative of the fact that I’m living to see it, I don’t care that much [...]
Holiday Madness Requires Therapy – Quick!
It occurred to me this year, as I frantically searched for shopping bargains while untangling non-functioning Christmas lights, that there’s a greatly needed (and currently unavailable) service during the holidays. It’s a wonder no one has thought about it before: Minute Therapy Clinics.
Seriously, does it not make sense? During the craziest time of the year, [...]

Preparing Your Car For Winter
The leaves have fallen, the temperature is dropping and winter is on its way. Cold weather really puts your car to the test. Although you can’t eliminate the chance of a breakdown entirely, there are some things you can do to greatly reduce your risk. If you have kept up with your vehicle’s maintenance, and [...]
Carmel Gets Into the Christmas Spirit
Surely, Scrooge is nowhere to be found in the vicinity of Carmel and Geist this year. After receiving a number of responses to my request about how people give back at Christmas on atCarmel.net, I was overwhelmed by the goodwill that so many of you can’t wait to extend to others this Christmas. From adopting [...]
Managing Whiners and Complainers: How to Handle Disgruntled Employees
Almost every workplace has one – the disgruntled employee who frequently complains to supervisors and co-workers.
Complaints might range from workload (too much, too little), supervisory style (too demanding, too lenient), co-workers (lazy or harassing), pay (always too low), tools (too primitive, too complicated), etc. Such an employee typically causes disruption and dissension in the workplace [...]
Beware of the Muggles
Most people have never heard of it. My family discovered it about three years ago and I cannot say enough wonderful things about it. It’s letterboxing and if you’ve been looking for a way to spend some quality time with your family, you’ve just found it. So what exactly is letterboxing? It’s like a treasure [...]

Modern Day Treasure Hunts: Geocaching
From the minute my husband described Geocaching to my two boys and me, we were hooked. In essence, Geocaching is a high-tech way to go on a treasure hunt – anywhere, anytime.
After punching in our home address on the official Geocaching website (www.geocaching.com), my husband quickly found several caches within a one mile radius of [...]
Young Marines Take Marching Orders for Fun
For decades, millions of young children have donned their camouflage pajamas and pretended to be brave soldiers or drill sergeants. But for some area youth, night ops and company drills are part of a dream come true.
A cross between scouting and boot camp, the Central Indiana Young Marines (CIYM) is a part of the Marine [...]
Keeping Holiday Photos Jolly
For most of us, this time of year feels like it has been put in fast forward. The weeks between Labor Day and the holidays seem to get closer every year, and there is always an endless to-do list to accomplish before Santa is hauling his happy butt down the chimney. At the top of [...]
Booming Carmel Businesses
On a chilly fall morning, Amanda Newman begins her day by sweeping the leaves from the front porch and sidewalk of her store, Amanda’s City-Chic Consignment in Carmel, a consignment store specializing in reselling furniture, home décor, and art work. “I wouldn’t say that people are spending more than in years past,“ states Newman, “but [...]
A Journey of Creative Renewal
We all feel the need to recharge our batteries from time to time; physically, mentally or professionally. Some turn off their cell phones, take a vacation or go for a run. Carmel High School Art Instructor, Jonathan Kane found a way to take it a step farther; much farther. This past summer, as a recipient [...]
